APRIL MISSION TEAM TO KENYA

This week we sent a team to Western Kenya for a medical focused mission trip. The team will consist of American nurses and other professionals along with a handful of our Kenyan graduate students and staff. We will set up village clinics focused on jigger removal. Jiggers are parasites that live in the dust and burrow into the villagers’ hands and feet, making it difficult for them to walk and perform daily activities. Research shows that the best treatment for jiggers is physical extraction using sterile medical instruments.

THE PROCESS WE USE TO REMOVE JIGGERS

Clean the affected area with soap + water + Prep the site with antiseptic

Remove the jiggers with scalpels and sterile needles

Spray the site with hydrogen peroxide

Cover the site with petroleum jelly to suffocate any jiggers left behind.

Provide the patients with clean socks + shoes.

Educate families how to rid their homes of jiggers

“When I started going to do the jigger removal trips I was floored at how many were dehabilitated by these bugs. It’s hard to see but it’s rewarding to be a part of the process of removing them and giving them instant relief in this way. Prayers for energy and focus for this trip so we can do what God needs us to do.”

“I’m from Wilmington, NC. I love the beach and and all things desserts. But mainly chocolate chip cookies. I’m an enneagram type 9 and middle child, the ultimate mediator! I’ve always wanted to be a nurse and part of that desire was traveling abroad and using my skills. So I am very excited to go on my first medical missions trip to Kenya! Prayer request would be for confidence in my abilities and building strong relationships with the people I meet!”
