Since they arrived at The Rev just before the holidays, The Giving Keys have been one of our best sellers. The brand was created by actress and singer/songwriter Caitlin Crosby on a trip to New York City. She started wearing the key to her hotel room as a necklace, and then realized in a way we, as people, are all like keys – “unique, flawed, scarred, and at risk of being discarded,”  and she wanted these keys to have their purpose renewed over and over again. She began selling these keys at her merchandise table after her performances, and their success sparked other innovative ideas. However, Caitlin was never about just being innovative. She truly cares for other people and believes in promoting self-worth.

Hand stamped with encouraging words, the idea behind the keys is that you pay the message forward when you no longer need it. Then share your story on the Giving Keys website. givingkeys_01

She met her now business partners on a rainy day on Hollywood Blvd in Los Angeles. The daughter of a talent manager for iconic celebrities and an actress/model, Caitlin spent most of her life amidst the glamor and superficiality that is Hollywood. The missing link to her business, Rob and Cera, were sitting under an umbrella holding a sign that said, “Ugly, Broke, & Hungry.” Wanting to add a charitable dimension to the business model, it wasn’t long before Caitlin’s vision became clear. The three had dinner together, and it was then that Caitlin found out that Cera made jewelry. This was her epiphany. The business owner teamed up with United Way and PATH, an LA based transitional home, to develop an in depth screening process. The homeless individuals who were employed truly had to want to change the course of their lives….and they have done just that. givingkeys_03

Since Caitlin started the business, over 500 stores in the U.S. (The Rev being one of those 😉 ) are selling The Giving Keys. The brand has expanded and has even partnered with Chrysalis, an organization dedicated to finding employment for those transitioning out of homelessness. There’s no doubt, the keys have definitely taken off, and did we mention all the celebrities that are wearing them? That’s right, starts like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and even Ryan Gosling (ladies, need we say more?!) are wearing the necklaces. You can read how this jewlery line is changing people’s lives or listen to Caitlin give more details on how the brand got started on her TedTalk here: .

Stop by The Rev to see all the amazing and inspirational quotes that are stamped onto these keys and see how you can be an encouragement in more lives than one!
